Overview
The BCVS1 12/1250/31.5kA (withdrawable) is the same 1250 A, 31.5 kA open-frame breaker on a chassis: the fixed part stays wired in the switchboard and the breaker is racked out without removing busbars or cables.
The open-frame construction keeps the main contacts and the mechanism accessible, so inspection and servicing are done without opening the device. Manual operation is standard, and protection is set with the trip units or relays defined on the order, following the coordination study of the switchboard. It is used in main low-voltage switchboards, packaged substations and generator set outgoing feeders where both the rated current and the short-circuit current are high.

Typical applications
- Main low-voltage switchboard in industrial and commercial plants
- Packaged substations and transformer centres
- Main outgoing feeder of medium and large generator sets
- Distribution boards in mining, ports and process plants
- Protection of incomers with high short-circuit current
- Upgrades of existing switchboards that need more breaking capacity
Fixed or withdrawable
The difference is how the device is mounted, not how much it can break. The fixed version is bolted to the busbars and is disconnected by releasing the terminals; the withdrawable version is racked off the circuit, with the breaker in the test or disconnected position.
- Fixed: lower cost and fewer moving parts, the right choice when the breaker is rarely replaced.
- Withdrawable: replacement or servicing in minutes, with the rest of the switchboard still live.
- Withdrawable: needs more switchboard depth and chassis rails on the order.
- Both keep the same rated current and the same breaking capacity.
Frequently asked questions
What does 31.5 kA mean on this breaker?
It is the short-circuit current the device can interrupt without damage. If the fault current calculated at the point of installation is higher, a device with a higher breaking capacity is needed, or upstream protection that limits the current.
Can a fixed version be replaced by a withdrawable one?
Not without changing the cradle: the withdrawable version needs the fixed part with rails and finger contacts fitted in the switchboard. Rated current and breaking capacity are identical, but space and wiring are not.
Does it ship with a protection relay?
The breaker ships with manual operation; trip units and relays are defined on the order according to the settings the project requires, so coordination with upstream and downstream protection is closed before dispatch.
